Our Core Philosophy
For years, outdoor adventurers have been locked into expensive, bundled ecosystems. We understand the frustration of paying recurring "suspension fees" or monthly minimums for gear you might only use a few times a season. That's why we created a service engineered for the modern outdoors—one that gives you the freedom of pay-as-you-go pricing and works with the devices you already own.
The Technological Shift
Recent advancements have fundamentally changed how we communicate off the grid. Many modern smartphones now feature the native capability to send and receive text messages globally via satellite, bypassing the need for cellular towers or when data service is unavailable.
We've built our platform to take advantage of this shift. Simply use our lightweight app to send unique SMS messages with GPS coordinates, and we reply with a hyper-local weather forecast for your exact location.
Minimize Your Gear and Costs
While our service was designed ground-up to leverage the native satellite messaging of modern smartphones, it is fundamentally hardware-agnostic. Our focus is helping you lighten your pack and decouple your weather forecasts from more expensive bundled solutions.
Whether you're looking for a cheaper Garmin inReach alternative, want to finally drop your ZOLEO subscription, or simply want to add reliable weather functionality to an existing SPOT device, ACR Bivy Stick, Motorola Defy, or Bolt WX, our simple SMS-based service works seamlessly with the gear you already trust.
Built for the Trails
Adjusting to changing conditions is crucial when navigating expansive terrain. The weather at the trailhead rarely matches what you'll encounter a few miles into your journey, making hyper-local, on-demand intel essential for a safe and successful trip.
SMS Weather On Demand keeps you covered from the humid stretches of the Appalachian Trail (AT) to the remote, high-altitude passes of the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) and the expansive deserts of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT).
It's equally valuable for targeted expeditions across the John Muir Trail (JMT), Colorado Trail, Arizona Trail (AZT), Wonderland Trail, the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT), or even areas known for a total lack of internet and cell service like Glacier National Park. You get coverage throughout the United States and Canada, and you only ever pay for the weather you request while you're out there.
