Whether you're backpacking deep in the wilderness, sailing offshore, or driving through a remote area, losing cell service doesn't mean you have to lose access to critical weather updates. Here is a guide on how to stay informed using the gear you already have.
The biggest danger of being off-grid isn't just the lack of communication; it's the inability to adapt to changing environments. Mountain storms can form in hours. Desert temperatures can swing wildly. Without updated forecasts, you are forced to rely on historical averages or weather reports that are days old.
If you have a recent smartphone (like an iPhone 14 or newer operating on iOS 18+), or Android phones (specifically the Google Pixel 9 series and Samsung Galaxy S25 series running Android 15+), you already possess a satellite communicator capable of sending and receiving text messages anywhere with a clear view of the sky.
By pairing your phone's native satellite messaging capabilities with a service like SMS Weather On Demand, you can request and receive hyper-local, accurate weather forecasts entirely via SMS.
The initial setup happens while you're online, so that you're ready to go when you're off the grid.
Create an account to verify your phone number. Then use the "Add to Home Screen" feature on your phone to install and run our lightweight application so it can be used offline.
Head out even where there's no internet. As long as your phone has the capability to send texts or use satellite messaging, you're covered.
Open the app from your home screen. It uses your GPS location and your selected forecast options to help prepare a unique text for your request.
Just hit 'send' in your messaging app. You'll get a weather forecast texted back in moments.
Please note: Standard messaging rates from your cellular or satellite carrier will apply for the SMS messages you send and receive. Coverage and Deliverability are also dependent on the cellular/satellite messaging providers you use.

Your first weather requests are on us. Test it out online or off-grid and see how easy it is to stay informed.
